TULSA, OK, Dec. 17, 2015 — On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Indian Nations Council of Governments (INCOG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a partnership between Tulsa Tough Inc. and the coming Tulsa Bike Share program.
“We are very excited to partner with Tulsa Tough in the creation of a separate nonprofit for Bike Share,” said Jennifer Haddaway, Transportation Resource Center (TRC) coordinator. “They are a vibrant and growing organization in our community that has created a lot of opportunities for cycling. We look forward to strengthening their goals as well as launching Tulsa Bike Share.”
INCOG is moving forward with development of the bike share operational model recommended in the Tulsa Bike Share Strategic Business Plan. This model involves two stages of management structure and multiple partners. For the first several years of this effort, a local existing nonprofit will house the bike share program, hire a program director, establish a board of directors, and potentially enter into a contractual agreement with a private bike share operator.
Private operators, such as Motivate or Bicycle Transit Systems, are for-profit companies that specialize in all aspects of bike share operations including bike distribution rebalancing; bike, station, and software maintenance; customer service; account management; and marketing and promotions. A transition to a separate nonprofit organization that independently manages Tulsa Bike Share will occur before Phase Two of the system.
“We see INCOG’s Bike Share program as a good fit for us in our effort to encourage people to adopt active lifestyles,” said Malcolm McCollam, Tulsa Tough executive director. “Cities across the country are recognizing the value of public bike share programs, and we’re excited to add Tulsa to that list.”
Tulsa Tough will hire a Tulsa Bike Share executive director as early as next spring. He or she will spend much time developing the bike share system but will also assist in Tulsa Tough activities when needed. Check the TRC website (www.tulsatrc.org) for information as the job description gets posted.
